Final Thoughts #11

I said goodbye to hastily on my last blog posting so April Fools!

This is my real goodbye but before I go I just want to say some final thoughts:

Blogging in English class is an inventive and creative outlet for students. It teaches students how to use their tone and voice more appropriately and it's more entertaining to write and maintain that voice compared to essays.

I don't take a lot of things seriously, I'm a joker, and try my hardest to just breeze through things. I'm a procrastinator and blogs made my job as a student to finish assignments more entertaining and made me take certain things more seriously. Did I take this fully seriously? Absolutely not, but I cared and it's the thought that matters (I hope).

Blogs are beneficial in honing a students voice and showing that what we learn in English class isn't a load of crap, it can actually be applied in the real world and our provided topics made students think critically about everyday things such as our technology and media.

In short, out of all my English assignments and classes, Hybrid will be my preferred. So thank a Hybrid teacher today!

With that being said, I am still a procrastinator. Assignments are still the vein of my existence, and personally, it's taking away from me watching The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions. They're too entertaining for my own good, especially with my short attention span and laziness.

Farewell - Entry #10

This is my last blog entry.

So Long, Farewell.

 It's been fun but I need to move on from my required English classes and onto more of my classes dedicated to my major.

The blogs were probably the most fun English assignments I've had and had a blast being self indulged (lol). But, in seriousness, the topics were fun and the personal entries were always a good way to reflect on my week.

If you like what I did post or want to chat, I'm just like every other young adult and I am on Facebook if you ever need me.

Media Overlords - Entry #9

Recently in my English class at college we've been going over media and as a Marketing major it's a fun topic because I'm already knowledgeable about it and it's what I will be working with in the future.

I think media, personally, is over controlling and worries and depends too much on stereotypes and trends. Even news has a shock value which is pretty pathetic, but they need viewers somehow.

In relation, and ironically, South Parks current season attacks how Ads evolving and taking over the town of South Park. Everyones opinion is based on these ads, they change their town because of them, and they worry too much about being "politically correct" to where a new character called "PC Principal" takes over the school. It effectively shows the relation of ads and news and how news are becoming ads.

It's also ironic since South Parks website used to be ad free and show every episode for free, but then it got bought out by Hulu which even with a standard subscription you still get ads and it counts down the ad even with Ad Blocker. Irony.

Gender Rolls - Entry #8

First off:
SCREW YOUR GENDER ROLLS, THEY'RE NOT EVEN BUTTERED.

Cyanide and Happiness is hilarious.

In relation to my last entry, stereotypes are full of crap. Everyone hears about stereotypes about race and ethnicity but no one really talks about gender roles. Now I have a girlfriend and I am comfortable with my sexuality so NO PUNCHS IN MY MAN CARD, but why do men and women worry about their roles in a relationship? Why care? Why (besides a fair wage now) do you need feminism when most (not all) are made to attack men and why do men on Reddit do a "mennist" movement to counter it? Where is "humanist"? Where is "equalist"? Stop with the -ism's and do what you want to do. Date who you want to date. Be who you want to be.

MEN - Entry #7

So everyone is equally victimized by stereotypes. Some stereotypes are used by informal demographic research that advertisement agencies don't really care about, try to make those stereotypes funny, and the result is a "meh" commercial.

Normally women are the subject of this matter but just because you're a woman, it does not mean men aren't stereotyped.

A blog called Dumb Men does a decent job to make this clear and supports it by showing stereotypical guy things in commercials and heavily uses the word "stupid" in the titles.

One commercial I found funny was one about a grilling dad (because I could even grill since I was born, any man can cause, MEN) but his look and appeal were kind of middle age, mid-life crisis like, and he couldn't grill. So naturally a random skinnier dude with hair somehow broke into this families house with a pizza (that will look good on camera but I guarantee looks and tastes like crap when you take it home) that has cheese burger ingredients on the pizza. He saved the family from their boring dad because that dad can't grill.

That better looking guy sure made a man out of that dad for not being able to grill. He needs a Disney musical number for it:

If it was a reversed role the woman would've been victimized and Tumblr would be in flames. I think the blog has a funny way to make the point clear that men can also be demeaned by stereotypes.

The only way, besides learning to grill, that that dad can get his manhood back is if he goes to get the crown from Shell City and change his underpants.

 

Dead Peasants - Extra Credit

So I'm just going to say it, the Punk genre has had the same message as Michael Moore and made it more fun to mosh to.

Personally I liked Mr. Moore's movie "Capitalism: A Love Story". It challenges the establishment and questions those in power. I'm a young adult, I am getting out of my rebellious stage; I like that.

I am playing favorites and just saying I love that he calls out Reagan. I personally hate how everyone raised in the 80's tries to compare how things are today with the 80's but fail to realize that the situations we've been in have "trickled down" since then. The benefits didn't "trickle down" like Reagan promised, the issues did. And that "trickle" is a big 'ol river now.

I am not a fan of Michael Moore as a person but, I respect anyone who can say something, back it up, and stick by it.

In the movie as well I was taken back the most from the "Dead Peasants" clause for insurance. It is exactly like the Dead Kennedy's song "Kill the Poor". It's shocking that anyone can put a monetary value on a life that involves direct profit where someone is worth more dead than alive.

I'm sorry but the last time people were treated like that an entire royal family was killed and communism became the political structure for Russia, and before that the French beheaded the entire upper class.

I don't know about you but knowing that those rich bastards view my life as worthless until dead makes the French method sound intriguing.

Crazy weekend - Entry #6

"So hey [random name], I just woke up from a weekend long nap, can you fill me in?"

"Oh sure well.."

Okay, so this weekend was probably the craziest. If someone were to wake up from a coma they would probably not believe the events recently.

(I am going in order from not so serious to serious)

First off, if someone were to tell me one month ago that Rhonda Rousey would get knocked out I wouldn't believe you. That was a shocker.

It's mean but funny.

Secondly, my personal opinion and kind of a side note: the debates are getting stupid. How's that you say? Well in the recent Democratic Debate, Hilary Clinton defended her reliance on Wall Street (her top 5 donors to her campaign are banks. AKA Wall Street) by screaming that she, "Was there during 9/11"...... Wait...... The dude asked about your reliance on banks for your campaign, and you pull 9/11 out of your ass basically claiming that the terrorist attacks were aimed for economic instability when it's been clear for years it was to strike fear into Americans and kill as many innocent people as possible. How are you a front runner?

Finally, is Paris.
If I woke up from a coma and told me about the attacks in Paris and how many people died, I'd think you're pitching another Die Hard movie. I know most people joke and tease the French calling them "Pussies" because of World War II but if anyone said that now, I'd wanna punch them. Our oldest ally was attacked and so many people affected. I'm happy that the French militaries counter attack has been devastating to ISIS and how quick a response people have had to support France and it's people. Now the media should also talk about the attacks in Beirut and honor those people as well.

Short Classes YAY Entry #5

Being a hybrid student at my local community college allows a lot of flexibility in my schedule and it saddens me that more courses don't offer it.

The thing is, especially now, [general] classes feel like repeated information that we've had prior experience with (specific degrees are very strict on time as well which can easily conflict with work schedules). We need the classes to pass, but need the money for the classes, but the classes are strung out and can conflict with work schedules. The thing that really sucks about most classes is that they're either going to conflict with your schedule with hours and weeks on end of class time OR you can take online classes which certain degrees require hands on learning activity that isn't able to be represented in a computer screen while you sit in your underwear in your kitchen at 3 in the morning.

Then God said to him, "LET THERE BE HYBRIDS"

Arizona State University is offering more classes that condenses 15 week classes into 7 and 1/2 week classes. AND they are *trying* to make it cheaper.

Who let this progressive, "think-about-the-students-well-being" person take control of our college system?

Students can pay less, learn more; have hands on and personal, self-taught, classes. It is easier to fit into a students work schedule, and can speed up the learning process so students can get certain classes out of the way and move closer and quicker to their degree and most importantly, get closer to working in the work force.

You go ASU, hopefully other colleges will take your lead.

Office Spaced Out

I'm pretty sure most people have seen Office Space, if you haven't, I highly suggest it. It's a really funny comedy and....... Sadly very accurate.

My entire work history has been call center based, mainly because there is a ton of call centers in this boring town called Phoenix. Call Center etiquette is the most bull crap filled thing on the planet that sadly pays college students well.

Imagine retail, but because people are over the phone, they are more willing to be anuses to the people trying to help them. So if about 80% of calls are a-holes that have no respect or morals why have an etiquette? Well besides "customer is always right", it's a death trap.

They put so many rules and restrictions on employees but try so hard to get them to care it's funny call centers haven't run out of money just paying for those stupid "fun-groups" that create boring work events with co-workers you don't care about.

It pays well, but I feel like I'm having my life sucked away.

I have never seen a comedy actually be accurate with it's jokes to where they don't become funny, it's reality.

Slanted Science - Entry #3

A lot of stories in American news reporting is infamous for being biased to support the ideas of the individuals, company, and investors of the news company. The most known is with politics and reporting on only political figures that support the political agenda of the company.

But Science?

A lot of stories are not relayed correctly to audiences. Science stories which are supposed to be factually based are some of the most slanted stories, either to just simply shorten the stories for other more "interesting" stories that add more viewers, because they may assume that their viewers won't understand the "complicated" stories, or to back the views of the company/investors.

The most recent example is of Mars and the discovery of water (which is *technically* old news).

All over the printed, broadcasted, and shared news; all headlines would read about liquid water on Mars and that it may currently support life (not that it can prove past existence of life). What is funny about that is that they did not report that the liquid water on Mars is filled with toxic, salt like, chemicals that would not be able to support life.

I guess when you need a story, you'll try to change info to keep viewers.

Yesterday was Halloween!
I personally love Halloween, it is my favorite holiday. It's during my favorite season and it's all about having fun. I am currently doing an essay for college in honor of Halloween (cause why not, I'm lazy) and it's all about the creeps.
Now not the creeps with vans, I mean the things we call "creepy". I've always been curious why some things will scare someone but that same thing has no effect on someone else (ex. clowns).
Below I have a Vsauce video about the creeps and I want to know your biggest phobia or scariest experience! Let me know, I may use it for my essay!

Blogs #1

I am not new to blogs by any means, I think they're great social sources and kinda fun to read through certain blogs that have share the same interests as me.
But I don't really care about blogs.
My main reasoning is due to a popular blog-site called Tumblr (may have heard of it) and the people who use it. DO NOT MISINTERPRET THIS, not everyone who uses Tumblr will fit with this and there is very funny and insightful things on Tumblr. Overall, I do not like how majority of the bloggers on that site are mostly teenaged, introverted, people with very little life experience but have an opinion on almost everything and make the smallest thing a huge issue. It's high school drama to-go.
Now with getting that out of the way, I like lists. Lists give you a lot of things at your disposal with little effort for search on your part. It's great. I did like Time's list mainly because of one blog on there (which it will take you to the description of) called "World War II Today" because I am a history buff with WWII as one of my favorite historical eras.
I highly suggest finding a list with multiple blogs if you're bored because you may find a great read in the list.

Intorduction

Aye Yo!

I'm back, it's been about 2 semesters (end of spring, summer, and beginning of fall) since I've been on my blogger. So let me reintroduce myself.

My name is Tyler Gormley, I am studying at Glendale Community College for Marketing and Business. I am 20 years old, but still act like a big child, mainly because I like to make jokes and puns about nearly everything. The more I grow up, the less I care as well, mainly because when I try to impress people its when I'm the most judged. My friends call me "The GOMS", previously called "Gomlay-nator", and before that, just "Gormley". I mostly spend time with my girlfriend and sometimes see my friends when our schedules are cleared (adulthood sucks bruh).

"Remember who you are"

I have a girlfriend I've been dating for awhile and really happy with. I also love animals, own 3 dogs (one of which is named after my favorite video game series), a bearded dragon named Avedis (after my favorite Cymbal company), and a cockatiel that I passionately hate. I love movies, currently due to the spooky season is Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness (because Bruce Campbell is freakin' awesome!)  but if you like Monty Python movies, action adventure, etc. you get the jist of it. If you're a gamer and got excited about the game series comment earlier I only really play Nintendo so sorry heavy gamers, I don't care about your console war, I'll just stay in my corner playing the Legend of Zelda series. 

live shows and chill

I love music, and not just listening, playing as well. I was raised on 80's pop and metal like "Pantera" and "White/Rob Zombie". I personally love not just those bands and genres but also classic rock, funk, jazz, hip hop, rap, R&B, and nearly every sub-genre of rock and metal. I have played in Alternative rock bands and my most successful band was a Pop Punk band called "A Thought Forgotten". I prefer to play drums but I can also play bass guitar, double bass, cello, and violin. 

Finale Entry #11

Tomorrow is my last day of anything to do with my college English 101 class and next week is Spring Break (Photo Related).

Will probably need OxiClean for those beer stained carpets.

But probably this class has probably been the most interesting and fun english class I've had. I've never blogged before (besides Facebooking) and I've never owned a journal/diary which I've always seen a blog as an online diary (Facebook shouldn't be one, just saying). I've somewhat enjoyed my time blogging, it's been fun posting about the events from my the weeks prior and trying to make it as fun as possible and because I tried to make it as fun as possible I can honestly say I didn't take it as seriously as I probably should've, as a result it did show in my grade, but that's my responsibility and only have myself to blame for that. 

Take responsibility like a man!

I must also say I didn't think this would really teach anything valuable but in the end I learned how much easier it is to communicate online and how I can find other blogs that share my interests, which is really awesome. The blog assignments have probably been the coolest english assignment ever, it was definitely the most interesting and fun. This is Gomes, signing off... (Until 102, if there even is blogs in that class).

Slimmer

The pink slime issue was a huge issue in 2012, if you haven't heard of it just type in "pink slime" on Google and you'll find plenty of articles. Pink slime is: "The lean finely textured beef is a low-cost product rendered from the mostly fatty outside trim of cow carcasses or leftovers from other cuts. To salvage every bit of meat, the trimmings, combined with connective tissues and cartilage, are heated at a low temperature to remove about 95 percent of the fat. The resulting product is then compressed into blocks to be mixed into ground beef and treated with ammonium hydroxide (essentially ammonia and water) to kill pathogens like E. coli and salmonella that could have emerged during the rendering process." (Zhao, Emmeline 2012, Paragraph 4) 

Personally, it doesn't taste as good as pure beef but, it's been used in meat since the 1990's. In fact people will state that pink slime is used because of weak regulations, but pink slime was the USDA's response to public outcry of E.Coli outbreaks from the 90's. The whole purpose is to disinfect the left overs of a cow and add to beef, presumably to get the most out of the cow. Pink Slime is gross, but it's only bad for health if processed incorrectly by the supplier. It may not be AS healthy as pure beef, may not taste AS good, but it is made for consumption. The ammonia involved is not the best thing for humans since it is a waste product of our bodies, so it is naturally not the healthiest thing. But, if you're eating nothing but McDonalds burgers, or eating nothing but ground beef, you should consider changing your diet to begin with. Pink slime or not, everything you can consume will be unhealthy if you consume too much of it.

"Bad" Words?

A link to a video is uncensored and has strong language and some may see as insulting. It is used to make an educational point and not intended to insult. Do not click on the link under the name "Reggie Watts" and "7 Dirty Words" if you do not like strong language.

The other day, my uncle and I were poking fun at my grandma for what she believes is bad language, even though this sweet lady curses like a sailor, and how we came to a conclusion that the words that are considered bad are only seen as bad because of how they're used but ironically their the most flexible words in the English language. For example, the infamous "F-Word" can be used almost anywhere in a sentence and if used correctly in a lecture setting can bring the most tone and voice into your statement.

I also noticed after our discussion how people blame media for it's influence of bad words, which in a sense they're absolutely right. FCC regulations have really loosened on what words can and can not be said on TV and Radio now. When I was 10, hearing middle school grade insults on air were hilarious but now you can hear high school grade insults on air on every station. For example, certain words like a!# or b*&% are now more acceptable than in years before. See George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words.

Now, music takes this to a-whole-nother level where the amount of bad language is used just to seem edgy for their scene/genre, which comedian Reggie Watts does a good job of breaking down modern hip-hop songs. He sings with the common words that are used and how loosely and pointless those words are, and each verse he sings is a different topic, which those are the common topics sang about in modern hip-hop, poking fun at the genre which I feel he does a good job of doing so with this song. He effectively used basic rhythms to get this point across in song.

As bad words are becoming more acceptable, what we consider bad will eventually not be considered bad and other words will replace those 'Bad' words. There are always new words being created and old words will always get repurposed. A perfect example without using such words is the word "swag". The word has been repurposed as to define cleaning drapes, to define a man who is smooth with ladies, to the recent use to replace the word "cool".

In the end, no matter what society is considering what is and isn't bad language, it all depends on how you were raised, religion, and personal principles. Bad language effects each person differently, and most will (and should) agree that terms to insult specific demographics will never be acceptable. Bad words don't always bring negativity, it's how a person uses them.

Small

Recently my group of friends just got into an argument while playing 8-player Super Smash Brothers. It was probably over one of the stupidest and funniest reasons why but we all just started cussing each other out and arguing until we migrated outside for a smoke (for me some cigars with a few from the group, another smaller amount of the group was smoking cigarettes, and only 3 friends didn't smoke anything) and then everything that was involved with hating each other just left us. We laid down in my driveway staring at the stars smoking reminiscing about our memories we've made together and when we were all laughing, our friend Jared made us realize that we as a group always argue over the stupidest crap and how petty those arguments were. We realized that we only have so much time together until we graduate, get jobs, and get families of our own. We started predicting each others futures and joking about how we will die and who will be the last of us to go in about 80 years from now. We had a bit of an concern of how we would leave a legacy and if we've done anything significant. Then we realized that we don't care about that. We all have left our mark on each other and thats all that matters. We got back up, went inside, and continued to yell at each other over a video game for the rest of the night, and it was awesome.

Food Glorious Food

Recently in my english class we watched "Fresh", which I thought was about the most annoying Facebook subject of GMO's but instead was about food industrialization and the possible effects of chemicals and how use of chemicals aren't natural. They stated that out food industry is unsustainable with nature and eventually nature will take it back, which is absolutely true. How the dust bowl was started during the great depression was due to poor agriculture techniques that were unregulated.

The thing is is that it is regulated now. This is a Capitalist country with supply and demand as the two commandments for our economic system. Currently there is a demand for foods that are unhealthy and a demand for a surplus of certain foods and regulations are sustaining our supply for the majority need and want. More people are now wanting healthier food, which they may eat, but they still won't get up away from their computer to be active. More people complain about GMO's but don't know what GMO stands for. More people are wanting organic food and want to be positive and help local farmers but it's not enough to become a demand because even though there is a greater amount of people now wanting healthier food, there is still a majority of people who are just fine with what we already have to eat and the price it's at.

It's excellent ideas to eat healthier, but healthy food does not always mean a healthy lifestyle. If someone wants to change the current industry they should get into politics and support the local farmers on a political level and help them still produce a surplus of organic foods. Otherwise, I just went to the doctor, I am considered an unhealthy eater, but I am active and because of that the doctor said my current diet is sustainable for me. There is so much more that is involved for each person beyond "eat healthier" because everyone is different. My need for organic is low, others who are unhealthy DO need it however. So instead of complaining about the industry, think of a solution. I would love to see the small guy take down the big corporations, question is who will lead those people and the lifestyle of change and how can they convince an entire nation?

Lost

Has anyone ever just felt lost? Not in a sense of physical, geographical, direction or lost in a moral dilemma, but lost in another person? It's an ironic subject for me especially since Valentines Day was just yesterday, yet Valentines Day didn't seem anything too special for me this year and that is not at all a bad thing, it's actually a good thing. For Valentines Day, my girlfriend and myself did what we do on a daily basis; had fun. Nothing too special. We went to the Japanese Friendship Garden (where we made friend-zone jokes due to its name), went and saw the Wedding Ringer (because if we wanted to watch 50 Shades of BS we would watch porn instead), went to a new Japanese restaurant called Hana on 7th Ave. and Missouri, then we just went home and watched YouTube videos. It wasn't anything extremely special and thats exactly how we like it.
We don't need to have a specific date to show and tell each other how much we love each other or go do events, we do it everyday. And as we sat on her couch watching Netflix I couldn't stop looking at her. I had always had bad luck with relationships because of assumptions about being a drummer in a band and I always got played for being nice, but with her I have always received the opposite. I feel the same with her as I do drumming. Time flies by me, I loose sense of my surroundings, I am only focused on her and any problems I've had feel as if I'm lifting 500lbs and she turns that into 10lbs. And because of that, I wish to always stay lost.

Final Form: Procrastination

Today for a class project we had to watch a clip from Wall-E with the clip titled Human Dystopia, to relate to our writing projects about technology and its effects on society. Everything has mostly been on the serious side for this project and the clip was a very nice comedic relief from what can easily become a boring subject. I also like how it shows corrupt corporations (isn't Disney one of them?) helping humans evolve into their final form: Lazysapian

I really think Skype, hovercraft, and LaZboy Furniture have a bright future ahead of them based off of Wall-E. I'm not going to lie, if I had one of those chairs it'd be YouTube all day every day where ever I go, but I particularly like how one of the guys falls out of the chair and is like a beached whale being told to wait until a servicebot comes to help him get back into the chair, and like how when the ladies video projection gets turned off she is in awe with whats around her as if she never has noticed her surroundings before. I felt that this scene alone is like people texting and driving or the teenage girls at Arrowhead mall walking and texting, completely oblivious to whats around them. I know I'm guilty.
